Why Personality (And Not Just Experience) Counts When Youre Hiring - Spark HireWhen youre scanning through resume after resume looking for your next great addition to the team, its easy to get hung up on a persons experience level. You focus on how long they were with a particular organization and look at dates carefully. While you certainly want an experienced person on your team, its important that you dont minimize the importance of a potential hires personality when theyre going through the interview process.Ultimately, an employees personality can make or break whether they blend well with the rest of your staff members. Its easy enough to teach someone how to use a computer program or follow company protocol with regard to clients, but you cant train someone to be enthusiastic, responsible, and deadline driven. Because of this, it may be time to shift your hiring efforts from focusing solely on experience to looking a little more deeply into what a person is really like.If you hire someone whos a bad fit for the company, you may quickly find that they start dragging other employees down. If theyre negative, petty, or overly competitive, an otherwise pleasant work environment can turn toxic quickly. Though they may know how to do paperwork properly or create a killer presentation, if they have no people skills, they end up representing the company negatively. Ultimately, this will end up hurting your bottom line. While you certainly want to find someone with the proper training, dont get so hung up on how many years theyve spent in the field. Its better to hire someone who wants to learn than it is to choose someone who has all of the experience necessary but couldnt care less about the company.Unfortunately, when companies are getting ready to bring on a large number of new employees at once, they often ditch looking at personality in favor of quickly scanning a persons experience. If your job is crappy, or non-existent, thats one thing. If you stay in that job, or stay jobless, thats on you. Its almost a new year, people, Lets MOVE IT Time to make good on a bad thing because this life of yours aint gonna change itselfKnowing you need to change your crappy job is NOT enough. You need to know why, like really why, you cant stand walking in the building each day . If you feel stressed about sitting in an open cubicle next to Anita who smacks her gum and talks about her cats all day, maybe simply moving to another desk would solve your problems. However, if your job problem is something more serious like low salary, no ability to advance, not feeling challenged, or having zero work experience, these things will take more doing to change. But they are mucksmuschenstill 100% doable.As with anything you undertake, you need a plan, honey. Last week, I asked you to bring your I CAN mindset with you. Did you do that? Great. Youre already moving in the right direction. Next, grab a journal (or you can use the back of one of those LATE PAYMENT envelopes if you really need motivation) and try these steps1. Remember, no solution is too far-fetchedTake Anita out to lunch and ask he r to share less or get a dog because you at least like dogs.Buy a book on how to ask for a raise.Set a meeting up with your boss to find out her priorities for the year.Ask specific people for help with your career search.3. Now write out how and when youre going to move in the direction of making these possible solutions a reality for your New Fabulous Life I call this Goaling, as in setting, writing and implementing your goals.
